Il Test di Schirmer è un semplice test che permette di quantificare la secrezione lacrimale basale, che risulta diminuita in alcune patologie (LES, Artrite reumatoide, S. di Sjogren) o per cause iatrogene legate all'assunzione di farmaci. Si esegue posizionando due striscioline di carta bibula millimetrate nel fornice congiuntivale e si attende alcuni minuti (5 min.). Al termine si misura la porzione di strisciolina inumidita: sotto un certo valore (10 mm.) si definisce l'occhio come secco, per cui bisogna ricorrere a terapia sostitutiva.
